Is Hyrox healthy? For most healthy adults, yes, when training builds up gradually and stays coached. Research backs real fitness gains, but close to half of Hyrox athletes report an overuse injury within a year, so how you train matters as much as whether you do it.

Is Hyrox Healthy? What the Research (and Our Own Race) Show

If you’ve typed “is Hyrox healthy” into Google before signing up for one, you’re asking the right question before you ask the fun ones. Four of us on the In Motion team ran a Hyrox relay together this past May, and we’ve also coached other athletes through their own Hyrox training. Here’s the short answer: yes, Hyrox can be a genuinely healthy addition to your training. But the research coming out on it also points to a real risk if you skip the buildup.

What Is Hyrox, Quickly

Hyrox alternates 8 kilometers of running with 8 functional stations:

  • ski erg
  • sled push
  • sled pull
  • burpee broad jumps
  • Rowing
  • farmer’s carry
  • sandbag lunges
  • wall balls.

Most competitors finish in around an hour and a half. (which is actually really, really fast)

Is Hyrox Healthy? The Short Answer

For most healthy adults, yes, especially if you build up gradually, learn the movements under coaching, and don’t treat every training session like race day. It’s a poor starting point if you’re untrained, returning from injury, or already dealing with nagging pain. Start there first, then layer Hyrox training on top.

The Benefits, Backed by Research

A 2025 meta-analysis in BMC Public Health looked at 19 high-quality studies covering 911 healthy people doing high-intensity functional training, the category Hyrox falls under. It found real improvements in strength, power, speed, agility, and endurance. One gap: it didn’t find a clear flexibility benefit, which we’ll discuss later in this post.

A 2025 study in Frontiers in Physiology had athletes complete a simulated Hyrox race and measured what actually predicted a faster finish. Running made up the bulk of the time, about 51 of the roughly 86 total minutes, and the athletes with higher VO2 max, more endurance training under their belt, and lower body fat finished faster. Grip strength and muscle mass didn’t move the needle. If you’ve been putting off Hyrox because you don’t feel “big enough,” that’s not what this sport actually rewards.

The Real Risk: Overuse, Not Accidents

A 2026 survey of 418 Hyrox athletes, published as a preprint out of Technical University of Munich, found that 49.8% had experienced a Hyrox-related injury in the past year. The most common spots were the knee, the back, and the lower leg, the kind of gradual, repetitive-strain issues that build up over weeks, not sudden accidents.

The part worth paying attention to: the one factor independently tied to injury risk was how often someone trained Hyrox-specific sessions. Age, gender, and body weight weren’t. This is a dosing problem, not a Hyrox-is-dangerous problem. Rest days matter as much as hard days, at any age.

What We Learned Training for Our Own Hyrox Relay

Four of us, Dr. Laura Sommer, Dr. Sarah Conroy, Dr. Samara Kelhoffer, and Dr. Sarah Maughan, ran a Hyrox relay together in May, each covering two stations and two runs. Dr. Samara Kelhoffer, who’s a PT, strength coach, and Pilates instructor on our team, built each of us an individualized program around our specific two stations plus the running. Nobody got hurt, and we’d all do it again. That’s not luck. That’s what happens when your training actually matches what you’re going to be asked to do.

A PT’s Take on the Recent Hyrox Headlines

You may have seen the discussion online from a recent Hyrox event where an athlete lost bowel control mid-race. As a PT, here’s how I think about it: when your pelvic floor muscles are weak and under stress, especially with the repeated jumping and impact loading Hyrox involves, leaking can happen. That’s a known risk with high-impact training and a common thing we treat.

But losing bowel control during exercise isn’t normal, and it shouldn’t be brushed off or pushed through. If you feel like you have to go, or you’re leaking urine during high-impact activity, that’s your body telling you to stop and get it looked at.

The good news: this is treatable. Core work, pelvic floor strengthening, and a gradual, guided return to running and high-impact training can resolve it for most people. It’s not a sentence where the answer is “you can never do this again.” It just needs to be addressed, and the underlying issue needs to be treated, not ignored.

How to Train for Hyrox Without Breaking Down

A few things we’d tell any athlete building toward a Hyrox event:

Build up slowly, and keep some sessions genuinely easy. The research is clear that frequency, not any single hard workout, is what drives injury risk.

Get your movement patterns screened before you stack on volume. A PT can catch the asymmetries and compensations that turn into knee and back pain months into training.

Add mobility work on purpose. The research shows high-intensity functional training doesn’t build flexibility on its own, and Hyrox’s stations mostly move you forward and back rather than side to side. Pilates and assisted stretching fill that gap.

And if you’re doing a relay, build a program around your specific stations, not a generic template. That’s what worked for our own team.

Fuel and hydrate like you would for any hour-plus effort. Hyrox events run long enough that under-fueling catches up with you in the back half.

Is Hyrox Healthy? Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hyrox safe for beginners?

Yes, with the right starting point. If you're new to structured training, build a running and strength base first, then add Hyrox-specific work under coaching.

Do I need to stretch separately from Hyrox training?

Yes. Hyrox training builds strength and endurance well, but studies haven't shown it improves flexibility on its own. Separate mobility work, like Pilates or assisted stretching, fills that gap.

How many days a week should I train for Hyrox?

Research points to training frequency as the biggest driver of injury, so most people do best with 3 to 4 focused sessions a week and real rest days between hard efforts, not daily Hyrox-style workouts.

Can physical therapy help me train for Hyrox?

Yes. A movement screen before you ramp up training can catch small issues, like asymmetries or muscle imbalances, before they become knee or back pain.

Is leaking or losing bladder or bowel control during exercise normal?

No. It's common enough that we treat it regularly, but it's not something to push through. It usually responds well to core and pelvic floor rehab.
