Do I need a doctor’s referral for sports physical therapy in Farmingdale?
No! Thanks to Direct Access laws in New York, you can start physical therapy without a physician referral. You can receive treatment for up to 30 days or 10 visits, whichever comes first. If you need continued care beyond that, we’ll help coordinate any necessary paperwork.
What should I expect at my first sports PT appointment?
Your first visit includes a comprehensive one-on-one evaluation with your Doctor of Physical Therapy. We’ll assess your injury, review your athletic history and goals, evaluate your movement patterns, and identify the root cause of your pain. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of your diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan designed specifically for your sport.
How long is each physical therapy session?
Sessions typically run 45-60 minutes, and you work one-on-one with your Doctor of Physical Therapy for the entire time. Unlike many clinics where therapists rotate between multiple patients, we provide dedicated, individualized attention throughout your entire appointment.
What’s the difference between physical therapy and sports performance training?
Physical therapy focuses on injury rehabilitation, pain relief, and restoring normal function after an injury or surgery. Sports performance training is for athletes looking to enhance their athletic abilities, prevent injuries, and optimize performance. Many athletes benefit from both—starting with PT to address injuries, then transitioning to performance training to reach peak athletic potential.
When should I see a physical therapist instead of just resting?
If pain persists beyond a few days, limits your ability to train or compete, or keeps coming back when you return to activity, it’s time to see a PT. Early intervention leads to faster recovery and better long-term outcomes. Waiting too long can allow compensatory movement patterns to develop, making recovery more difficult and increasing re-injury risk.
Can you treat injuries specific to my sport?
Absolutely. Our team has extensive experience treating athletes in gymnastics, soccer, dance, lacrosse, golf, running, baseball, and many other sports. As former athletes ourselves—including NCAA Division I competitors—we understand sport-specific demands and design treatment around your exact movements, positions, and performance goals.
