What You Need to Know About Reformer Pilates

Hey Long Island Athletes! (yes, Moms are definitely athletes)

Have you ever heard of Reformer Pilates? Maybe you’ve seen the new machines in our office and thought, “Those look like medieval torture devices”.  (spoiler alert: they are not)

Pilates is a form of exercise that is focused on controlled movements, breath, and mind-body connection. Reformer Pilates is this exercise done on a machine called a “Reformer”.

The Reformer is a highly versatile piece of equipment that allows for a personalized, low-impact workout that targets your entire body.

This machine looks similar to a Physical Therapy treatment table but is a little bit longer and narrower. There is a piece that moves, called the carriage. The carriage movement is controlled by springs that can change resistance depending on the exercise. There is a footbar at the bottom of the machine and straps located at the top.

Carriage, Springs, Straps- what is going on?

Don’t worry- our expert Samara is here to guide you step by step through your Pilates session.

1. Strength

Resistance from the carriage and adjustable springs provide a challenging strength training workout. The exercises work multiple muscle groups simultaneously, improving total body strength and muscular endurance. The ability to change the resistance level allows you to progressively increase the intensity over time.

2. Flexibility

The reformer carriage moves fluidly, enabling exercises that involve controlled lengthening and stretching of the muscles. This improves overall flexibility, joint mobility, and range of motion. The emphasis on proper form and alignment helps increase flexibility safely and effectively.

3. Core Stability

A major focus of pilates is developing a strong, stable core by engaging the deep abdominal and back muscles. The reformer allows for many variations of core-centric exercises that challenge balance and recruit the core stabilizing muscles. This leads to improved posture, reduced back pain, and a solid foundation for movement.

4. Focus

Reformer pilates requires intense focus and concentration to control the movements and coordinate breath with the exercises- All while not falling off the machine!

This mind-body connection enhances body awareness, proprioception, and overall mindfulness during the workout. The focus and mental engagement provide benefits that extend beyond just the physical aspects of training.
